John can you post a pic or two of the cracks? I would love to see. I have been talking to a bunch of guys that have cracked flex plates this year. But none have been the better brand name stuff.

Here is the best pic I have, at each location where the converter bolts up, the welds have cracked and are gone, its double welded (both sides)

Went to Harbor Frieght to pick up a tranny jack, said they had one, got there and they do, its right here in the catalog, can special order it for you? What the hell? :SM031: So, pulled the tranny without it, sent it in for a rebuild, inspected flexplate, has broken welds where converter bolts in. Ordered a new one, still on the fence on this. A new 168 th from TCI around $70.00, replace the existing one CSR $178, anyone know the difference if any? (other than $100 bucks)

How old is that CSR? Maybe it's time for an ATI. I've heard they are the best, but that's a spendy flexplate. No matter what you go with, just check it over really well to make sure the welds look good and such.

We were told it was 2 years old, but the only numbers are the SFI ones. I would guess that its probably older than that and about ready to throw the ring gear. Glad we checked it, could have been a bad day if it came apart.

The Good news is, the tranny I took in for a freshen up, has a few good parts: the case is ok, the pan is good and the paint on the outside is good! the rest is all scrap iron. It had been rebuilt about 80 passes ago and put back together wrong! Drum, pump, clutches, shafts all shot. Alot of parts metal to metal. Had been running it all year that way, was wondering what that noise was.

I showed your pics to some guys and Steve Casner wrote me back this:

Gordon,

The pics that John has on that link show a CSR flexplate that has had the ring gear replaced by someone. That is NOT a CSR factory welded ring gear. Tell him to order a new CSR and not worry about it.

Hmmm, that is interesting, I wonder if its the same guy that rebuilt the tranny last time, its about in the same shape. How could he tell that from the pict? Would be good to know

Well today I got off work early and came home to start working on the bike. I got the plastics all stripped and all the damaged parts off the bike. Damage isn't too bad. Of course new plastics, new left side engine cover (no debris found in engine), right side foot brake lever (bent when bike being removed from track), left side foot peg, new shift linkage, new frame sliders, and new front fairing stay (metal dash, headlight, and fairing support).

Pics of todays progress.....

Making a list & checking it twice. Trying to figure out where the money is coming from.
Lets see, I need new rockers (broke 2 at the Classic), new oil pan (stock one leaks), need to change the rear gears to higher ratio, new oil pump to increase flow & pressure. Probably something else I'll think of later.

Try using a throttle cable for a 2-bl carb.
I use the 307 2bl cable on my NOVA and it has no issues reaching full throttle.

What do you use for a cable bracket? That could also contribute to your problem.

Well, since I'm halfway there, and I love to drive across the country, I'd be glad to pick it up and deliver to you. Of course, I'd have to stop at a few places along the way and use your new piperack to try to win gas money!

Here is a pict of the new one, not double welded like the old one. Called CSR and they said " we no longer manfacture them that way, now they are pressed in and welded from the back. Thats how Steve Casner knew. Just hope it hold up as well as the old one did!
